About Momento

In an era where social media prioritizes engagement and viewpoints of others over authenticity, genuine human connection is contested. Maintaining genuine connection and updating lives with friends and family becomes superficial with the selective process of only sharing content that we want others to see. Momento is a photo and video sharing app that notifies users four different times during the day, including morning, lunch, afternoon and evening, to capture what they are doing on that moment. Once the four moments are captured, users can personalize (but not redo pictures!) their experience by adding captions and background music. Momento finally compiles these moments into a “day in my life” video, making it easy to share genuine snippets of their full day with loved ones.

Research Process

Our research process involved utilizing user surveys and user interviews to collect information about how individuals’ opinions of authenticity on social media and their experiences with content creating/content sharing apps. Through both data collection techniques, we aimed to collect holistic and accurate information. We conducted two user interviews: one with a student experienced in vlogging and video editing, and another with a student indifferent to it. We found that students strongly believe media shared online is unauthentic, especially when coming from influencers or celebrities. Feelings of frustration often arise as a result, as viewers end up believing they are unable to achieve their desired lifestyle. When asked about video editing specifically, students shared that dealing with piecing together smaller clips becomes a hassle, leading to longer times spent editing their video and an overall decrease in motivation to vlog. We highly valued gathering data from all perspectives, so our survey included 41 college students, varying in year and differing in an extensive variation of majors. We carefully selected questions about the most used qualities of social media, amount of free time per day, and vlog creation frequency From surveying a wide range of college students, we found that 60% feel that the difficulty of editing videos discourages them from doing it frequently. 36% of students also feel that the lack of time, skills, and tools prevents them from regularly sharing parts of their day through video vlogs. Students still maintained that, at its core, social media's most important purpose is to communicate and stay connected with others. Based on this data we collected, we designed Memento with college students in mind, incorporating features and tools tailored to their needs and concerns.

Most Important Design Features

Out design emphasizes authenticity in shared moments and the importance of staying connect to others daily. Stemming from these values, our most important design features include our vlogging page and editing page. The vlogging page allows users to record 1-3 seconds of their day during random times when the solo vlog option is selected. This notification will go off 2 times randomly during the morning, afternoon, and evening, encouraging users to be genuine and authentic with the content they share on social media. The frequency of videos through the day are heavily inspired by the “Day in My Life” videos that reflect user’s day-to-day life. Another aspect in social media apps that is important to many is the ability to stay connected with others, even from a great distance. After taking this into account, we created a collaborative vlog option. This feature lets users contribute their own clips to a single video with up to 3 other individuals, fostering meaningful connections. Users can also join communities via the explore page or connect with friend groups to vlog together. Communities encourage users to meet new people around the world and see how their days differ to theirs in an accessible and authentic way. Aside from maintaining values of communication, our editing page allows for easy and customizable editing of vlogs. The “Lazy Mode” option compiles clips from throughout the day and pieces them together into a vlog with smooth transitions, with the help of AI. This feature creates easier useability when it comes to editing options for users. Smart Templates are also available for users if they want a more curated vlog, with styles ranging from montages, casual, aesthetic, and more. Lastly, at the end of each month, a monthly highlight montage can be created with favorite moments from the past month. This montage can be created automatically, again, prioritizing ease of use for the user.
