Inspiration
We were inspired by the Confessions at UCI Facebook page, which many of us have spent hours perusing.
What it does
The UCI Confessions page displays a confession box where users can type in their "confessions" or anonymous posts. It will also direct users to the homepage where users can read other confessions from students. You can also sort the submissions from oldest to newest. Users are also allowed to go back and submit other posts.
How we built it
First, we did a few brainstorms of functions we wanted the page to have and designed a few mockups of what the website would like on Figma (see pictures or Miscellaneous section). We moved onto using Visual Studio Code and made a website using HTML, CSS, Python, and Bootstrap; we used PyMongo as our database to store the users' submissions. We went to the Web Development workshop WICS hosted and learned a lot of helpful information through it. Mentors also helped us out with the Mongo Database, as well.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges with setting up our database in PyMongo and referencing our pages together. Many team members were very new to web development and it was also their first attendance at a hackathon. It was difficult to learn the programs that are needed to build a website while also implementing that knowledge and actually building the project. Our team was able to understand the problems and with the help of a mentor, we were able to smoothly run our first webpage.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the work we were able to finish within the time frame given and also pleased with the learning experience from this hackathon. Our team is proud of the aesthetic user interface and how our webpage is designed to give students a platform to submit fun posts!
What we learned
Our team learned a lot about using different languages such as HTML and CSS. Many of us did not have any prior knowledge but were still able to come together and build a webpage. Our team learned how to connect the front-end and back-end development together to build a platform and a database.
What's next for UCI Confessions Page
If we were to continue working on the webpage, we would want to refine some of the edges and add more functions such as upvoting and picture submissions. We would also add a comment feature as well as look into more moderating tools.
