Inspiration
Our entire team is composed of Computer Science and Engineering majors. We have little to no time to go to the gym, eat right, or even sleep proper hours. Having an app that is able to manage all of these aspects of healthy living would be extremely beneficial to ourselves, and would lead us to be happier each day.
What it does
This app helps students manage a schedule to go to the gym, provides hours of gym and exercise classes to motivate students to work out, and provides meal options for those that are looking to restrict their diets in order to help them control their food intake. In short, this allows students to have a simple way of maintaining a healthier lifestyle through their busy schedules.
How we built it
Using the Eclipse software, we coded the different aspects of this proof-of-concept app with Java. Through many if-statements and functions, we were able to create different parts of the app which we thought were important to include.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was the inability to work on a single code on different devices, therefore having to later collaborate on one device and wasting more time. Another challenge we faced was having to convert our regularly coded console based language to a window frame.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the fact that together, we were able to create this project completely from scratch. We had to hard code each and every element and function by ourselves, which is something we had never done before.
What we learned
We learned many things about Java itself. For example, we learned about frames and how to develop game-like software on our own.
What's next for UC Merced Physical Fitness Tracker
We are hoping that this idea can be taken further to be developed into a mobile app because we believe that this would be extremely beneficial to many students on campus.
