Inspiration
The majority of us are CSE 365 students which inspired us to explore how easy/complex it would be to create a phishing scam.
What it does
This project mimics the ubhacking.com website up until a user tries to login, at which point they are notified that this is a phishing scam and to be more careful with random links on the internet.
How we built it
We copied the HTML and CSS from the ubhacking.com website onto our website, ubhacking.org, then set up a server and changed the functionality of some buttons and links that forces victims to login before accessing anything. Upon a login attempt, users are notified of the phishing scam.
Challenges we ran into
We originally planned on logging emails and passwords in a database to really grab the users attention, but we questioned the ethics of this and redirected to just notifying a user. We had no malicious intent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a working project at the end of a hackathon! This project is also a great way to learn about phishing!
What we learned
We all learned how easy it is to impersonate a website to steal information. How to work as a team despite not everyone knowing each other prior to the event.
What's next for UB Hacking Phishing
Next we will discuss putting this link into the UB Hacking discord in order to test how many people really fall for the scam.
