Inspiration
Without the help of an advisor it can be tricky to navigate your advisement report alone. Even when you figure out how to read it and you see the many options of Gen Eds and Tech Electives you can take it can be a hassle to open a bunch of tabs to see all the course descriptions. However, what if there was a chat bot that had your data on classes you did and could supply the data for you on one page?
What it does
The chat bot is able to access the student's advisement report and is able to view classes completed, grades, tech electives they can take for their major, gen ed categories that have been satisfied or not satisfied, and course descriptions. With this information the bot is able to assist the student like an advisor would without the need of setting up an appointment. The bot is also able to add classes to the students cart when requested.
How we built it
We used AWS for the back end of the bots data collections and the data it would side, like the new class it would add to the shopping cart. The front end is made using React, HTML, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was making the AI sound less robotic and try to speak to the user in a more "human" way. Also figuring out how to connect the front end with the back end remains to be an issue.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have a mock up of the AI completed that would be able to do the tasks we wanted. This was the first time using AWS at this extent and we are so proud of ourselves for making it as far as we did.
What we learned
We learned many things about the implementation of AI. AI is not perfect especially when you have to re tune your prompts over and over to get the bot to behave a certain way. It was interesting to get to understand how to make your own version of an LLM.
What's next for UAccess Chat Bot (Improve Arizona Challenge)
We plan to have this connected to a front end. When it comes to the actual UAccess we hope to see UA have the advisement report as a csv to allow for a chat bot similar to ours be open to students to use.
