Inspiration
Navigating sudden physical symptoms or skin changes often leads to an overwhelming cycle of confusing web searches, anxiety, and guesswork. We created Kenko (健康) to replace health uncertainty with calm, accessible clarity. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of balance and thoughtful minimalism, we designed a simple, reassuring space that helps users make sense of what they are feeling before they speak with a medical professional.
What it does
Kenko acts as an intuitive health evaluation tool that helps users understand their symptoms and prepare for doctor visits:
- Symptom & Physical Assessment: Combines how you feel with physical observations, like skin moisture, dryness, or tone changes.
- Checks Your Thoughts: Evaluates your own guesses about what might be wrong, explaining whether your symptoms line up with those conditions.
- Photo Checking: Allows users to upload photos of visible issues—like skin rashes or throat irritation—for clearer visual context.
- Easy-to-Understand Care Levels: Categorizes the urgency of your situation into clear next steps, from simple home care to immediate emergency attention.
- Doctor Discussion Guide: Creates a personalized list of plain-language questions to bring to your next medical appointment.
How we built it
- User Interface: Built using Next.js and TypeScript for a smooth, fast single-page experience.
- Visual Design: Designed with a clean, low-stress dark theme using Tailwind CSS to keep the experience calm and easy on the eyes.
- AI Engine: Powered by Google Gemini to review text descriptions and photo uploads at the same time.
- Reliable Format: Structured the AI to deliver consistent, organized answer cards that display cleanly without technical clutter.
Challenges we ran into
- Keeping Responses Simple & Clear: Training the system to deliver straightforward, medical-friendly insights without using overly complex or confusing jargon.
- Prioritizing Safety: Ensuring the system instantly identifies critical red-flag symptoms and shows urgent emergency warnings first.
- Creating a Calming Visual Experience: Balancing detailed health information with a clean, clutter-free layout that reduces user anxiety.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Human-Centered Results: Transforming vague descriptions and physical signs into simple, structured summaries that anyone can understand.
- Stress-Free Design: Creating an ultra-clean visual style that makes discussing health concerns feel calm and manageable.
- Combined Photo & Text Insights: Seamlessly processing photo uploads alongside typed descriptions in a single quick step.
What we learned
- Clear Communication Matters: How essential simple, organized information is when people are feeling unwell or anxious.
- Designing for Health Safety: How to responsibly combine helpful AI guidance with strict safety reminders and emergency guidance.
- The Value of Minimalist Design: How a clean, thoughtful layout significantly reduces stress when reviewing health information.
What's next for Kenko
- Health Device Connections: Connecting with smartwatches to automatically check helpful signs like heart rate or skin temperature.
- Multiple Languages: Making health insights and doctor discussion guides available in different languages so more people can benefit.
- Symptom History: Allowing users to keep a simple private log of how their symptoms change over time.
