u Lose i Find (ULIF) is the ultimate solution for a seamless lost and found experience at Concordia University! Tired of losing things and never finding them again? Our app connects the lost with the found in a click. With ULIF Concordia, report lost items effortlessly and connect with fellow students to reunite with your belongings.

Inspiration

We decided to make the app because one of our team members has the tendency to lose her most valuable items, and she understands too well the stress of possibly never seeing them again. Our school doesn’t have a specific room for lost and found items, so we decided to make an app for it.

The name of our app is inspired by the iconically named electronic repair shop chain uBreakiFix.

What it does

U Lose I Find is a website where students can report found objects by uploading a photo of the item and describing where it was discovered. Students who have lost an item can look through the found items page to see if someone has found what they were looking for. They can then contact the finder to be reunited with their belongings. If their misplaced item isn't already listed on the website, they can describe it in the lost items section and include their contact information.

How we built it

We thought about creating a functional website for Concordia students. We used HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Firebase. We tracked our code using Git and GitHub.

Challenges we ran into

We needed to implement a backend because we wanted to create an interactive website. Three of the four teammates had no prior experience with the back end. We figured out how to connect our chosen database to our program, despite initial difficulties.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our entire project. This is our first time building a full-stack website using three languages that we only learned on the same day. Furthermore, despite having almost no knowledge of how back-end works, we were able to successfully implement it. Also, we made an excellent team because our knowledge seemed to complement one another.

What we learned

We learned how to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build a website. We also learned how to use Firebase to implement the backend. We learned how to work together efficiently and programmed in pairs.

What's next for u Lose i Find

Given more time, we would create a sorting system for found items so that they can be organized by location found and category (electronics, school work, etc.). We would also implement a system to verify students' identities to prevent thief or usurpation.

The next step for our project is turning it into a mobile app that is compatible with iOS and Android devices, or integrating it into the existing Concordia University app. We could also adapt the app for different universities.
