TypingBull AI Classroom Coach
Bringing typing education into the classroom with AI-assisted learning
💡 Inspiration
Schools teach students computer fundamentals, programming, and digital literacy. But one essential skill often gets overlooked: typing.
Today, students across almost every field need to use computers for assignments, research, communication, and professional work. Yet many students are expected to learn typing on their own, without structured lessons or guidance.
I started asking myself a simple question: Why shouldn't students begin learning this essential digital skill at school?
That question inspired TypingBull AI Classroom Coach, an extension of my work on TypingBull, designed to explore how schools can make typing practice more structured, engaging, and guided by teachers.
🎯 What it does
TypingBull AI Classroom Coach explores a classroom-focused approach to typing education that connects student practice, teacher guidance, and AI-assisted insights.
The project focuses on:
- Classroom-based practice: A workflow for teachers to organise typing activities and help students begin practice.
- Student performance insights: Using indicators such as words per minute and accuracy to understand typing performance.
- AI-assisted coaching: Helping interpret performance information and identify areas where a student may benefit from additional practice.
- Targeted drills: Connecting identified learning needs with focused practice activities.
- Teacher-guided learning: Keeping teachers involved in directing classroom activities and supporting students.
- A continuous learning loop: Practice → understand performance → identify areas to improve → practise again.
The goal is not to replace teachers with AI. It is to explore how AI can support teachers in making typing practice more purposeful.
🛠️ How I built it
I developed TypingBull AI Classroom Coach as a classroom-focused project connected to the broader TypingBull typing-learning platform.
The project combines a web-based classroom experience with a workflow for student practice, performance review, and AI-assisted learning support. The development process involved building the interface, connecting classroom-related functionality, and exploring how AI could help turn performance information into useful next steps.
Rather than treating typing as a one-time activity, I focused on the learning process around it: students practise, their performance is reviewed, areas for improvement are identified, and another round of practice can help reinforce learning.
🚧 Challenges I faced
One of the main challenges was thinking beyond the typing test itself. A useful classroom tool needs to consider both sides of the experience: students need an easy way to practise, while teachers need a manageable way to guide activities and understand student progress.
Another challenge was deciding how AI should fit into the learning process. AI-generated feedback is most useful when it supports a clear educational goal rather than adding complexity for its own sake.
I also had to consider the practical realities of school computer labs, including simple classroom access and a workflow that could fit into an existing computer class.
These challenges pushed me to think about the complete learning experience, not just the interface or the typing activity.
📚 What I learned
Building this project helped me think more deeply about applying AI to a real educational problem. I learned that an AI-powered education tool needs more than a chatbot: it needs meaningful context, useful feedback, clear next steps, and a human teacher who remains part of the process.
I also learned to approach product development from the user's perspective. A feature may be technically interesting, but it needs to fit the way students and teachers actually work.
🚀 What's next?
My vision is to make structured typing education easier for schools to introduce and easier for students to practise consistently.
Future improvements could include more structured lesson progressions, teacher-assigned activities, class-level progress summaries, more personalised practice recommendations, and a smoother school onboarding experience.
Typing is a foundational digital skill, and I believe students deserve opportunities to develop it before they enter higher education or the workforce.
