Inspiration
We found the current Tyee planners not as useful as we’d like. We’re hoping to create a better one that would be more widely adopted.
What it does
It's a calendar where people can add events and comment on them (all moderated by AI.) There are also notifications to get you used to checking the website to check for upcoming events.
How we built it
We use Next.js and MongoDB as the database. We use Gemini Pro API for moderation along with Tailwind for CSS.
Challenges we ran into
It was pretty hard to get a good moderation prompt for Gemini, along with dealing with dates in JavaScript and creating a good format for them. We weren't able to get push notifications to work with our web frameworks, so we had to get rid of them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the Gemini moderation and the loads of functionality we were able to add to the website.
What we learned
We learned how to deal with dates in JavaScript and how to moderate with AI APIs.
What's next for Tyee Calendar
We want to expand and improve the UX and make it mobile responsive. We'd also want to make sure all of the features are bug free and that it can actually be used by students and will replace planners once and for all. We'd also want to add push notifications and potentially make it a PWA.
