Inspiration
Twitter is a platform that allows unprecedented conversation across the globe. Many activists and community leaders have taken advantage of this to spread awareness and take action to improve their communities. However, there is always room for improvement. We built a prototype Event management system for Twitter to give users more tools to connect with each other. Especially during this time of isolation, it's critical for people to connect virtually in meaningful ways to keep up the fight against systems of oppression. What better way to do that than through Events organized on one of the biggest social media platforms in the world?
What it does
Twitter Flights is a prototype Event management system for Twitter. Twitters users can log in to the web app to see events other users have created and create their own events.
How we built it
Our tech stack includes React, ArcGIS API, MongoDB, Twitter API, HTML, and CSS.
Challenges we ran into
We had to pivot our idea because less than 4% of tweets we searched for had georeferenced data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We worked together well and learned several new technologies in less than 72 hours!
What we learned
We should have allowed more time for the demo and video!!
What's next for Twitter Together
Flights present two essential ways for Twitter to grow. First, Twitter can monetize event creation for companies that would like to promote events on the platform. In addition, Twitter can map hashtags and trending topics, which will encourage users to turn on georeferencing permissions.
