Inspiration
As individuals going into the tech industry, a key concern we've noticed is the lack of female mentorship in these (and other) male dominated fields. We've also noticed that this lack of representation can pose a serious issue because it discourages women from entering male dominated fields, which then limits diversity in the workforce. As a result, we wanted to design a project that allows for female mentors to inspire others to pursue their goals.
What it does
Our project allows for mentees to connect with experienced mentors. These mentors will provide the mentees with guidance in the different fields the mentees are pursuing. In addition, the mentors and mentees will be able to collaborate on projects so that the mentees can further develop the skills they wish to grow.
The application will also benefit mentees by pointing them towards resources they can use. Currently, the application promotes resources at Purdue but going forward it will include even more.
How we built it
The frontend of our project was designed with Figma. Utilizing the developer's tools feature of the program, we were able to design a smooth looking frontend which we were able to convert to css files that we could use for our project. We then combined the css files with react.js and TypeScript to create our initial project.
Challenges we ran into
As this was our first time working with Figma, we faced a bit of a learning curve. Not only was it confusing to design the different pages, but we also struggled with taking the code and modifying it with react. Although we struggled with these, we persisted and overcame these struggles through experimentation and guidance from the Hackathon mentors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of the design of our application. Compared to last year's project, we were able to create a cleaner and more organized project. Additionally, we love the idea of our application and think it would be a very useful tool for all women.
What we learned
We were able to expand our technical skills through learning more about programs like Figma. The limited time we were given to design and develop this project enhanced our ability to brainstorm and consider what a client would want from a product like this.
We were also able to talk to recruiters and learn more about the different companies present and the projects that they worked on. L3Harris and Groq were two of the companies we talked to the most and it was really cool to see what both companies were doing!
What's next for Twinnin
As of now, our project aims to benefit Purdue students with the mentors we wish to recruit being Purdue faculty, alumni, and upperclassmen peers. Going forward, we hope to expand our application so that it can benefit women on a global scale. We also don't have a solid backend nor authentication feature for our project, so implementing a stronger one would also be useful.
