Inspiration
We all encounter a lot of tweets where we have no idea what the person is talking about. This is more so for news sniippets. Often just googling the tweet does not give the right answer. It is so frustrating!!!
What it does
Tweet2News is an extension to chrome, wherein you select the twitter text and through the context menu click on "Find the article". This pops up a browser tab with the best article for the tweet.
How I built it
Newsrooms have become quite active on Twitter, tweeting about the latest news with embedded links in their tweets. We find the key words in a given tweet and search twitter with these words and find tweets with links in the search results. We zoom into the right link by applying further heuristics.
Challenges I ran into
Twitter does not expose some APIs we would have liked and it has a rate limit. We often ran into problems with this while coming up with the best query search API for twitter.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We did well for the first hackathon with a working demo.
What I learned
We had no experience with Twitter APIs, web mining which we had to learn on the fly in a very short time. Its been exciting.
What's next for Tweet2News
We are using the best words from the tweet for the search query but its still in its early stages. There is so much more information such as the person who tweeted and his interests. We would like to enhance our algorithm with this information and hit the right articles all the time. In addition lot of times tweets are live and there are no articles on the web. We would like to build a summary of the live event by combining tweets from people and build our own article. The same can be extended beyond Twitter. When reading an article on the web, there are some words which stump us. The go to approach is google it by typing in the relevant words. We want to expand Tweet2News to Words2Article which builds search query not only from the words you searched but also takes in the context of the web page you are searching from and return the best article for that.
