Inspiration

We noticed that the education system is outdated and underfunded in Washington State especially in rural areas and downtown Seattle. Additionally, after covid hit, personally, we have felt a lot of pressure catching up with work after our academics slowed down during the pandemic. Many other students also began struggling in school due to less resources

What it does

It creates a one on one tutoring session that links up registered tutors and students, creating a specific and personalized tutor for every student's needs (according to grade, subject, level, etc.)

How we built it

We used various open source libraries to build our app. For UI, we used HTML, Tailwind, and DaisyUI. For the live whiteboard, we used an open source tool called “tldraw” (https://github.com/tldraw/tldraw). For graphic design, we used Canva, and seamlessly integrated these graphics onto our site. For the live chat and tutor linking, we created a custom backend.

Challenges we ran into

At first we were struggling with thinking of unique ideas to solve this issue. We knew that there were many educational websites all with their own features, and our app had to be distinguishable from these applications. Eventually we settled on an idea that would be both beneficial to students but also for the tutors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the User Interface and graphics. We believe that we designed a very youth friendly website that is simple to use for students to navigate. We are also very happy with the end result of the UI in the “Session” interface.

What we learned

We learned just how broken Washington's education system is and how much we need to work as a community to solve these issues, not just with our developed app but with proper government intervention and management of funds. We also realized how essential it is to create a friendly and professional UI to give our website a finished look that attracts people who are willing to use our site.

What's next for TutorTown

We plan to include new features in our application, using Open AI and Weaviate to provide asynchronous assistance to students. We also look forward to expanding TutorTown into other regions and finding sponsorships to turn TutorTown into a non-profit.
