Inspiration

The inspiration for our peer tutoring app, TutorSphere, stemmed from the observed challenges within peer tutoring programs, particularly at Green Level High School. We noticed difficulties in matching student tutors with other students, tracking tutoring progress, and maintaining communication, which hindered the overall effectiveness of the program. To address these issues and enhance academic support, we devised TutorSphere as an integrated solution.

What it does

TutorSphere is a platform that streamlines the peer tutoring process by matching students with suitable tutors based on academic needs and expertise. It facilitates communication among students, tutors, and program administrators while providing tools for easy progress tracking and feedback. The app aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for academic growth and success.

How we built it

We began by conducting surveys and interviews with relevant parties - students, tutors, and program administrators - to understand their needs and preferences. Utilizing MIT App Inventor, we developed a user-friendly app with features like profile systems for tutors and students, a matching algorithm for efficient pairing, and communication tools for real-time updates and feedback. The technical process involved database management, UI/UX design, and coding functionalities to ensure a seamless user experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the initial challenges was learning and navigating MIT App Inventor, especially coming from a background more familiar with text-based coding. Understanding database integration and designing an intuitive UI were also hurdles we faced. Additionally, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among team members while balancing technical development tasks required careful coordination.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Firstly, we are extremely proud of our brainstorming and development of our app idea, as it addresses genuine challenges encountered in peer tutoring programs at school, which could otherwise be advantageous for students involved. Next, we learned how to use MIT App Inventor, a platform for creating mobile apps, which was a new and exciting experience for us. As a team, we effectively integrated our ideas into the app, completing tasks on time. Overall, it was a rewarding journey of learning, creativity, and teamwork.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained valuable skills in teamwork, collaboration, UI/UX design, database management, and mobile app development using MIT App Inventor. We also deepened our understanding of the importance of user feedback and iterative development processes in creating solutions focused on users.

What's next for TutorSphere

Looking ahead, we plan to implement additional features such as a chat/messaging system within the app to further enhance communication between tutors and students. We hope to expand TutorSphere beyond Green Level High School to other schools in our county, state, and potentially nationwide, contributing to broader academic success and community support initiatives.
