Inspiration

As a parent in the US, I struggled to find tutors I could trust—many platforms lacked verification, and tracking my kid’s progress was a hassle. I wanted a solution that combined safety, ease of use, and robust learning tools—something for families like mine who prioritize quality and transparency.

What it does

Tutor Match Pro matches parents with verified K-12/college tutors (background-checked, credential-authenticated) across NA & Europe. It includes session booking, progress tracking, automated parent reports, a collaborative whiteboard, and file sharing—all in an English-only, user-friendly interface.

How we built it

We started with core user flows (parent search, tutor registration) using React for the frontend and Node.js/Express for the backend. We integrated MongoDB for user/tutor data, AWS S3 for session recordings, and WebSockets for real-time whiteboard sync. We designed the UI with TailwindCSS to hit the specified color palette and animation requirements, using intersection observers for scroll-triggered animations.

Challenges we ran into

Getting real-time whiteboard sync to work seamlessly across devices was tough—we had to debug WebSocket latency issues for weeks. Ensuring background check statuses only displayed approved badges also required strict data validation to avoid misinformation. Responsive design for the carousel/tutor grid took multiple iterations to work on mobile/tablet.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a fully responsive platform that meets all verification & usability requirements—parents can find tutors, book sessions, and track progress in one place. The scroll-triggered animations and gradient hero section work flawlessly, and tutor profiles only go live after full verification—keeping families safe.

What we learned

We mastered real-time web functionality with WebSockets, refined our UX/UI skills for Western family audiences, and learned to prioritize data validation for safety-critical features (background checks). We also gained hands-on experience with OAuth integration and cloud storage scaling.

What's next for this project

We plan to add in-app messaging between parents/tutors, expand the resource library with subject-specific materials, and optimize session recording compression for faster access. Long-term, we want to add advanced progress analytics to help families track learning milestones more effectively.
