Inspiration

As students, we often struggle with finding the right study plan, breaking topics into manageable chunks, and staying consistent before exams. Existing tools are either too generic or lack personalization. This inspired us to build TutorGenie – an AI-powered study mentor that creates personalized 14-day study plans and supports learners with explanations, quizzes, and reflection prompts.

What it does

TutorGenie helps students by:

Generating a custom 14-day study schedule based on subject, exam date, and level.

Providing clear, simplified explanations for complex topics.

Offering practice quizzes to check understanding.

Giving step-by-step problem-solving assistance.

Asking reflection questions to strengthen long-term memory.

How we built it

We used PartyRock (AWS) to create the app flow with widgets for input (subject, exam date, level) and output (study plan, quizzes, explanations).

Generative AI powers the custom responses, while carefully crafted prompts ensure structured and useful outputs for learners.

The design was kept simple and intuitive so that even first-time users could navigate it easily.

Challenges we ran into

Crafting the right prompts to ensure consistency in outputs (study plans had to be balanced, not too vague or too detailed).

Structuring the flow so that inputs connect properly to outputs (initially input widgets were not displaying correctly).

Ensuring the app felt like a mentor, not just a Q&A bot, required iterating on prompt design and workflow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Designed and deployed a secure, user-friendly platform connecting students and tutors.

Implemented in-app chat for safe, real-time communication.

Built efficient search and filter features for quick tutor discovery.

Focused on smooth user experience and scalability.

What we learned

How to design AI-powered apps using PartyRock with a balance of input widgets, variables, and output blocks.

The importance of prompt engineering in guiding AI to produce clear, actionable results.

That simplicity in design and user flow is key to making tools genuinely helpful and impactful.

What's next for Tutor Genie

Adding multi-language support so learners worldwide can use it.

Expanding beyond 14 days to flexible study plans (7-day crash course, 30-day prep, etc.).

Including a progress tracker and reminders for accountability.

Gamifying quizzes and reflection prompts to make studying more engaging.
