Inspiration

Students needs tutoring assistance in STEM subjects due to lack of traditional learning in personalized feedback. Hiring private tutors can be expensive, while conventional learning videos don't provide tailored response when a student need help on a specific concept. We introduce*TutorBuddy* to bridge this gap: an accessible AI-powered tutoring companion that supports both national and international curricula, adapting directly to each student's pace.

What it does

It provides students with interactive , step-by-step problem-solving and using socrative methods that is combined with live tutor discussion. Key features include:

  • National and Internastional Curriculum Supports local and international learning standards with dual-language capability.
  • AI Tutoring: Instant, contextual guidance to help students understand foundational concepts rather than just giving away final answers.
  • Monetization & Subscriptions: Offers flexible access via a freemium token model and premium monthly passes, allowing students to explore freely and unlock unlimited learning on demand.

How we built it

  • Mobile Client: Built for Android using modern native development practices, ensuring high responsiveness and smooth UI across a wide range of devices.
  • Monetization Engine (RevenueCat): We integrated RevenueCat with Google Play In-App Billing to manage in-app products (token packs) and recurring subscriptions. RevenueCat streamlined receipt verification, user entitlement mapping, and cross-platform purchase handling with minimal backend overhead.
  • Backend & Cloud Infrastructure: Powered by Google Firebase (Authentication for secure login, Cloud Firestore for real-time data sync, and Firebase Cloud Messaging for study reminders and updates).

Challenges we faced

  • Privacy & Compliance Alignment: Managing Google Play's strict child safety and privacy declarations while balancing analytics and billing dependencies required rigorous manifest tuning and automated check reconciliations.
  • Cross-Curriculum Content Design: Structuring dynamic quiz generation and AI responses so they remain pedagogically accurate and grade-appropriate across diverse curriculum standards.
  • Billing Flow in Testing Tracks: Configuring closed testing sandbox environments and ensuring seamless synchronization between Google Play Billing, Service Account credentials, and RevenueCat offerings.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully shipping a compliant, fully functioning Android build to the Google Play Closed Testing track (com.sinergibahagia.tutorbuddy).
  • Achieving an end-to-end, zero-friction monetization flow powered by RevenueCat sandbox testing.
  • Creating an educational tool that balances engaging interactive quizzes with deep conceptual explanations.

What we learned

  • The immense developer velocity provided by RevenueCat in abstracting away native billing complexity and server-side receipt validation.
  • How to properly navigate Google Play's evolving policy landscape regarding device permissions, data safety, and target audience standards.

What's next for TutorBuddy

  • Regional Expansion: Expanding full distribution across the ASEAN market with localized multi-language support.
  • Expanded Curricula: Adding specialized preparatory modules for Cambridge IGCSE, IB, and higher secondary national exams.
  • Advanced AI Tutor Personas: Introducing adaptive voice interactions and visual step-by-step diagram analysis.
