TUTall Overview

We recently discovered a growing problem among today's up-and-coming scholars:

A decrease in knowledge of the invisible rules of higher education and navigation. The FGLI generation (First Generation/Low Income generation) lacks mechanisms to pull what truly matters from the hurdles of financial aid navigation, academic planning, or difficult STEM prerequisites.

TUTall will help with this. Anyone can see how to make sure they pass their classes, what grants they are eligible for, and what academic benchmarks to achieve. TUTall is an AI-powered learning equity platform that helps with this.

Inspiration

My cousin stared at the university portal, lost. One missed financial deadline or misunderstood policy could cost them their entire STEM major. But unknowingly and overwhelmed by all the complicated academic jargon, they almost gave up, not knowing how to access tutoring or find a mentor. The situation had them terrified when they realized how much they didn't know, but luckily we stepped in to help. This incident has come to our notice and inspired the creation of TUTall.

What it does

TUTall analyzes complex academic regulations and scholarship requirements in seconds, delivering free 24/7 STEM tutoring, decoding hidden university expectations, and providing personalized learning paths powered by advanced AI.

How we built it

We built TUTall using Next.js and TypeScript for a fast, scalable frontend, styled with Tailwind CSS for a clean and intuitive UI. To ensure true accessibility, we engineered the entire platform to be incredibly lightweight, staying under a 2MB total footprint so it runs seamlessly even on low-bandwidth data plans. The platform is deployed live on Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was motivating the AI to reliably deliver high-quality, 24/7 STEM tutoring while keeping the overall application size under 2MB for students on cheap data plans. We also had to carefully balance response times with contextual accuracy to ensure users received instant academic support without sacrificing the security of their data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • 1 — Engineering a fully capable AI platform that is 100% free forever and optimized for low-bandwidth cellular environments.
  • 2 — Creating an experience simple enough for a first-generation student with zero family background in college to navigate confidently.

What we learned

We discovered that creating highly accessible, low-data AI output is a greater challenge than simply developing AI. Students need digital accessibility and clarity, not just powerful algorithms. Additionally, we discovered how important empathetic prompt engineering is when translating cold, institutional higher-ed speak into encouraging guidance.

What's next for TUTall

We're just getting started. Next steps include expanding support for offline-first learning modes, introducing peer-to-peer mentorship networks, adding application tracking features for matched grants, and exploring integrations with university portal systems. Our goal is to make higher education success accessible to everyone—not just those who can afford expensive guidance.
