Hackathon

This was built during the DSTA Brainhack Code_EXP 2024 Hackathon. This hackathon focuses on mobile development, ideation and pitching skills.

Problem Statement

Develop a mobile application that mitigates in some form the consequences of climate change

Inspiration

Technology to combat climate change: explain our interpretation of the problem (conservation of biodiversity) and our focus (turtle museum) Abusal/ neglect/ poor handling of pet terrapins (turtles) just throw in the news articles use more images than words Lack of awareness regarding our dying biodiversity (specifically turtles like e.g loss of habitat, temperature causing skewed gender ratio) Lack of funding with regard to conservatory efforts People who want to help may not have the means to help

What it does

Turtogotchi is more than just a game. It's an innovative tool that leverages technology to combat conservation issues caused by climate change and raise awareness about biodiversity. We hope to foster a deeper understanding and responsibility for these incredible creatures. By raising awareness about the museum through our game, we can also attract more visitors and supporters to the museum, securing its future.

How we built it

We utilized Flutter and Dart to be able to launch on both iOS and Android native systems without the need for two separate codebases. We created original handmade retro 8-bit turtle sprites, animations and accessories for our in-game assets. We leveraged Firebase's robustness and convenience for our backend. Using it for both user authentication via email and Google providers as well as Firestore as our database provider.

What's next for Turtogatchi

Due to the limited time frame of the hackathon, being only 4 days of development, our team is looking to expand and add more complex features to our game. Such as minigames, more turtle and accessory assets, as well as social features. We intend to create new turtle management systems and refine our monetary and in-game economy.

Our team is applying for Singapore's SPCA Animal Advocacy Grant award next! If we are successful we will have secured funding to develop our application in the next 12 months.
