Inspiration
Fast fashion has significantly contributed to the decline of the environment. The industry is the 2nd largest consumer of water and is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions. Furthermore, their use of cheap plastic fibers and toxic dyes pollute the ocean, proving fatal for many of our oceans’ inhabitants, including turtles. Yet because they are so financially viable for consumers, these issues are often glazed over and the industry continues to grow.
What it does
We designed an app that guides individuals to sustainable fashion sites that offer the clothing products they are searching for. By simply uploading an image of a product they like, customers will immediately be notified if the product is eco-friendly, and, if not, they will be directed to a page listing alternative, similar products from environmentally friendly companies
How we built it
We used React Native to implement the interfaces, which we designed on Figma. We used firebase to support the back end implementation. ## Challenges we ran into Learning the intricacies of React Native was challenging as none of us were experienced in the details of React Native. Also, figuring out how to combine our codes without discrepancies, which was challenging within the time constraints. Web Scraping and finding a reverse-image API that we could easily integrate was challenging because most technologies were hard to access. Also, nobody in the team had prior experience with Figma.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making a comprehensive design plan with Figma, having fully functional authentication for users, and implementing a majority of the front end
What we learned
We learned how to design a project, implement several details of that project, and learned new techniques surrounding front end development, such as react native and Figma.
What's next for Turtleneck
We want to expand our database to include many companies. Perhaps we could do this with AI, we could automate this process. We would also like to use webs scraping to figure out what materials were used to create the clothes, which would help us determine how sustainably they were made. We would like to partner with companies in the future and use our point system to offer them discounts, which would incentivize users to continue to use our app and help sustainable companies grow.
