Inspiration
Addiction is a difficult subject to tackle; whether it’s you who’s suffering or a loved one, we want to help make the transition to sobriety easier. With the ongoing opioid crisis, more resources need to be available to those who need them the most. We wanted to build something that is both accessible and personalizable. Having both a website and an app fulfills this need. Our passion to help the most vulnerable in society drives our development and the development of Turning Point.
What it does
The website provides resources for addiction. There is also a self-questionnaire to help determine if you should consider seeking help. The resources provided are focused on the Calgary area, with other links and phone numbers being for Alberta and Canada. Nicotine and opioid resources are also available.
How we built it
We used the following programs and technologies:
- Figma for app prototyping
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- TypeScript
- React
- GitHub
Challenges we ran into
We faced difficulty with deciding what technologies to use. The group was only familiar with HTML and CSS, so we took a risk and explored new programs to build our project. Even with familiar technologies, we only had a beginner’s understanding of them. This challenged us to expand our knowledge and test new skills in a competitive environment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we completed this project. Designing both a website and an associated application in one day is a task none of us have attempted before. For all of us, this is the first hack-a-thon we have done. Successfully materializing our ideas into reality is a goal we achieved. Our cooperation and synergy is another thing we take pride in. Our determination to try something new has rewarded us with this experience.
What we learned
We learned a lot as this was our entire group's first hackathon experience. We learned how to develop an app using Figma, extract the backend code from that, deal with merge conflicts, and manage our synergy as a group. We learned how to pace ourselves when dealing with a project in this environment, and we learned how to brainstorm in order to come to a tangible idea effectively.
What's next for Turning Point - Ready to turn a new leaf?
Our next step is to gain financing for our app to make final changes before publishing. With funding, we would expand the capabilities of Turning Point’s mobile application. It can become more personalized. The website can also grow to include location-specific resources depending on where the user lives. This feature can be included in the app.
