🌱 Carbon Karma
Inspiration
Climate change and carbon emissions often feel overwhelming at an individual level. Many people want to live more sustainably but don’t know how their daily travel choices impact the planet. Carbon Karma was inspired by the idea that small, informed decisions—especially around transportation—can collectively make a big difference. We wanted to turn awareness into action by making carbon footprints easy to understand and reduce.
What It Does
Carbon Karma helps users plan journeys while tracking and reducing their carbon footprint. It: Calculates the carbon emissions of different travel options Compares eco-friendly alternatives (public transport, walking, cycling, carpooling) Encourages greener choices by showing the environmental impact in a simple, relatable way Rewards users with “karma points” for choosing sustainable travel options
How We Built It
We built Carbon Karma by combining: A journey planning system that analyzes routes and travel modes Carbon emission calculation logic based on transportation types A user-friendly interface to visualize emissions and greener alternatives Basic gamification elements to motivate behavior change The focus was on keeping the experience intuitive, informative, and motivating rather than overwhelming.
Challenges We Ran Into
Accurately estimating carbon emissions across different travel modes Balancing simplicity with meaningful environmental data Designing an interface that educates without guilt-tripping users Integrating sustainability insights into a smooth journey-planning flow
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
Successfully linking journey planning with carbon impact awareness Making sustainability feel approachable and actionable Creating a concept that encourages positive habits rather than punishment Building a project that blends environmental responsibility with everyday convenience
What We Learned
Users are more likely to make eco-friendly choices when information is visual and easy to understand Gamification can positively influence sustainable behavior Even simple design decisions can significantly affect user engagement Sustainability tools work best when they fit naturally into daily routines
What’s Next for Carbon Karma
Expanding carbon calculations to include more travel modes and real-time data Adding personalized sustainability goals and progress tracking Integrating rewards, challenges, and community features Partnering with local transit systems and green initiatives Turning Carbon Karma into a full-featured, real-world sustainability companion
