Inspiration

With every passing year, video game graphics get more and more advanced. Turn-Based Texts look to the past where text-based turn-based games ruled supreme. Starting off with the massively popular Wordle, out game TXTLE brings the functionality of Wordle to SMS. Our next game project, pushes the technical boundaries by generating and sending an current snapshot of a MMO Fantasy world.

What it does

Turn-Based Text interprets text commands received via SMS and replies with a visual representation of a multiplayer game.

How we built it

We used Twilio's APIs and webhooks to send a receive SMS messages to a AWS hosted Python Flask server. From there, game boards are dynamically created on the fly to represent the current state of gameboard.

Challenges we ran into

No one on our team has ever implemented a project with AWS, we also had no experiences with databases. Port rules and security settings were both large parts of the learning process.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team set out with a plan to create a full-graphics multiplayer RPG game. Realizing that this project was ambitious, we decided to start with a simpler goal. We are very proud that we were able to make significant progress to our original goal.

What's next for Turn-Based Text

Flesh out our RPG to include more than just walking. This turn-based RPG could eventually include procedurally generated worlds, chat, inventory and combat.
