Inspiration

TuMaquinaYa was inspired by a problem we saw on both sides of the construction machinery market. Many machine owners invest in expensive equipment but struggle to find clients, which leaves their machines unused and creates financial losses. At the same time, contractors and construction companies often have a hard time finding the right machine with the right specifications, availability, and location.

We wanted to make this process easier, faster, and more reliable.

What it does

TuMaquinaYa is a B2B marketplace that connects contractors and construction companies with trusted machinery providers. Through our platform, users can rent equipment such as excavators, cranes, and other construction machines without dealing with the complications of buying, owning, or maintaining them.

Our business model is based on a commission per rental hour. For example, if a machine costs COP 80,000 per hour, TuMaquinaYa charges a 2.5% fee:

[ 80{,}000 \times 0.025 = 2{,}000 ]

This means we earn COP 2,000 per rental hour while helping machine owners generate income and helping clients access the equipment they need.

How we built it

We started with an MVP through WhatsApp to validate the idea quickly and understand how clients and machine owners interact. Instead of building a full app immediately, we focused on learning from real users, managing requests manually, and testing whether people were willing to pay for the service.

The MVP allows us to coordinate machinery requests, calculate fees, communicate with providers, and support the logistics of transporting the machine.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was creating a fair payment model for both the machine owner and the client. Since the exact number of rental hours can change during a project, we needed a flexible system that could start with an advance payment and then adjust based on the real usage.

Another challenge was building trust. Construction machinery is expensive, and both sides need confidence that the service will be reliable, transparent, and fair.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of identifying a real problem in the construction industry and creating a simple MVP to test our solution. We also built a business model that can generate revenue while helping machine owners use their equipment more efficiently.

Most importantly, we are proud that TuMaquinaYa creates value for both sides: providers get more clients, and contractors get easier access to machinery.

What we learned

We learned that the construction machinery rental process has many inefficiencies, especially around availability, trust, pricing, and logistics. We also learned that starting with a simple MVP can be more useful than building a complete app from the beginning, because it allows us to validate the market before investing more time and resources.

What's next for TuMaquinaYa

The next step for TuMaquinaYa is to turn the WhatsApp MVP into a more complete digital platform. We want to add machine listings, provider profiles, availability tracking, secure payments, transportation coordination, and a rating system.

Our goal is to become the easiest and most trusted way to rent construction machinery in Colombia and eventually expand to other markets.
