The inspiration for this project comes from our own experience as students. Many times we didn't know where the next lecture takes place, or what lab is going to be next. If we wanted to get there on time, we had to ask our classmates or laboriously search for the information in MAIS. Also deadlines for exams and assignment were a little hard to remember for some of us. Since there is no app on the market that combines these important tasks of every student, we came up with the idea for our TUKE SMART GUIDE app.
What it does
TUKE SMART GUIDE app shows your schedule for the current day. You can browse through classes you are taking current semester, make notes and add activities to your calendar specifically for individual subjects. If you are unsure about how to get to your lecture/lab location, no problem, the navigation with map will help you get there on time.
How we built it
Our app was built in React Native. We used back4app - open source backend as a Service provider- to store information about users: their login, password , iCals.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was React Native alone. Then there were some problems with data parsing, and transforming it to the form suitable for our application.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of parsing iCal data from MAIS and using it all across our TUKE SMART GUIDE. We also thinks that nice design and user authentification will make our app popular among students.
What we learned
We broadened our knowledge about React Native, data parsing. Moreover, we learned how to work as team long-distance.
What's next for TUKE SMART GUIDE
After discussing multiple ideas for the future development, we think that TUKE SMART GUIDE could include functionality to display money balance on student's ISIC. Also integration of DPMK and TUKE canteens menus for the day would be of a great use to all students.
