Inspiration

Temple University has a huge number of clubs, organizations, events, faculty, research opportunities, and other resources for students. However, finding these opportunities can require searching through many different websites, departments, social media pages and combing through directories to find a member to help a student.

We wanted to create a centralized platform that makes it easier for Temple students to discover what's available to them. That idea became TUgether — a place where students can discover, connect, and get involved with the Temple community.

What it does

TUgether brings Temple-related opportunities into one website. Students can use the platform to:

  • Discover clubs and student organizations
  • Find upcoming events
  • Explore Temple faculty and their areas of expertise
  • Find research opportunities
  • Discover campus resources and facilities
  • Connect with communities and opportunities that match their interests

Our goal is to make finding opportunities around Temple simpler and more accessible.

How we built it

We built TUgether as a web application using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Express, and PostgreSQL. We deployed the website using Render.

The application uses PostgreSQL to store and manage information, while Express handles the backend functionality that connects the website to the database.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was figuring out how to organize such a large amount of information into a platform that would remain simple and easy to navigate.

We also had to work through the challenges of connecting our frontend, backend, and PostgreSQL database while making sure information could be retrieved and displayed correctly. Synchronization within the group was an obstacle as everybody has little experience with the stack needed to deploy a website.

Because we were building the project during a hackathon, another challenge was deciding which features to prioritize while working within a limited amount of time. We are an ambitious team with ideas of multiple features but being able to incorporate and agree on these additions requires meetings and mutual understanding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to take our initial idea and turn it into a deployed website mockup within the timeframe of OwlHacks 2026.

We're especially proud of creating a centralized platform that brings together different types of Temple opportunities instead of focusing on just one category. We also successfully connected our application to a PostgreSQL database and deployed the project online through Render.

Most importantly, TUgether gave us the opportunity to build something specifically designed around the Temple student experience.

What we learned

Through building TUgether, we learned more about full-stack web development and how the different parts of a web application work together.

We gained experience working with Express and PostgreSQL, connecting a database to a web application, deploying a project with Render, and designing a platform around an actual user problem.

We also learned how important it is to divide responsibilities, prioritize features, and adapt when building a project under a tight hackathon deadline.

What's next for TUgether

Our long-term vision is to make TUgether a more connected platform for the entire Temple community.
