Inspiration

Loneliness for young people, especially students, is at an all-time high, with many struggling to find meaningful ways to connect. This challenge inspired us to create twogether, a platform designed to combat loneliness by fostering connections through volunteering.

What it does

twogether connects students to curated, local volunteering opportunities where they can make an impact, meet like-minded peers, and track their contributions through a gamified Kindness Score.

How we built it

We used React Native with Expo for the mobile app and TypeScript for maintainable code. Next.js powers the server-side rendering for the web interface, and the backend is built with Node.js

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was differentiating twogether from existing social or volunteering apps. Many focus on either connections or volunteering, but not both.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of crafting a platform that not only addresses loneliness but also empowers students to actively contribute to their communities. Both users and student organisations can benefit from its usage.

What we learned

Connections need to be fostered. By combining user feedback with research on loneliness and mental health, we’ve designed an app that’s not just functional but also impactful - users have the opportunity to see their impact.

What's next for twogether

In the future we'd like to provide the opportunity to create connections within the app (twogether friends) and integrate mindfulness exercises in the app.
