Inspiration

The Problem we found out through research was that the black community severely lags behind the white community when it comes to participation in the stock market. This has led to an expansive wealth gap between the two communities which we hope our solution can help reduce. There two driving factors for this particular solution. Firstly, we had some experience in the stock market, and we understood the challenges that we and some of our friends had experienced, especially as people of color. We realized that most brokerage platforms sold our data, and did not actual execute our trades directly. Secondly, the Accenture challenge inspired us to make our solution extremely learning-based so that we can share knowledge in the black community.

What it does

Tubman is a truly free market brokerage platform that is made for the people by the people and is specifically aimed at building community, fostering mentorship and education among the black community. This will help in the upskilling of this community which has previously shied away from the markets because of fear and lack of knowledge.

How we built it

We built the android version of our application using Java. We built the ios version of our application using swift and javascript. Our prototype was built on top of Figma.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges when we were prototyping the application. We had so many interactions embedded into the prototype that made it very complex to manage at a point. We also had to manage android development and emulators on Mac computers which were difficult to figure out at first.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of an application that is practical and addresses the actual needs and problems the black community is facing every day. We are proud we were able to have MVPs of both the android and ios versions of our application. We are proud or prototype is clean, functional, and fun to play with.

What we learned

We learned how to work as a team. We learned the intricacies of Figma as we prototyped and we learned how to understand the user story and create a full-fledged application. We also got better at our mobile app development skills.

What's next for Tubman

Tubman will be looking to iterate on the app versions further. We plan to add the clover API to the wallet in order to track user spending. We plan to add more partnerships and incentives with other black-owned initiatives to further our reach within the community. Our next milestone would be validation testing by 4/19.
