Frustrated with the amount of unnecessary deaths that occur each year from texting and driving, we decided there has to be a way to get people to be more responsible.
What it does
It responds to text messages received while driving with a short "I am driving, ttyl".
How we built it
None of us had ever built an android app before, but it seemed like a great option. We found that you can use sms receiving and sending in you're app, and it fit our needs perfectly.
Challenges we ran into
We started off trying to integrate the twilio api with our web app, but realized this proved to be quite the work around. After multiple attempts of errors with web servers we decided it was time to pivot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It took us a full 22 hours of hacking before we saw the first positive result, and from there on out it was just constant results that took us to the app we now have. It tried our persistence, but that's in the spirit of hacking.
What we learned
We learned how to make android apps that can respond and receive sms which can be applied in a variety of ways.
What's next for ttyl
We'd love to integrate google maps API so instead of having to enter the app and then transfer to maps, it'll all be taken care of on the back end while you're traveling.
