Inspiration

College students are constantly moving between dorms and apartments, and sometimes perfectly good furniture, electronics, and dorm essentials get thrown away simply because they are no longer needed.

The same thing happens with textbooks. You might finish Calculus and have a calculus textbook sitting on your shelf that you’ll never use again, while another Red Raider is about to pay full price for that exact same book.

That inspired us to create TTU Marketplace—a place where Red Raiders can give their old items and textbooks a second life, save money, reduce waste, and help another student at the same time.

What it does

TTU Marketplace is a student-focused online marketplace built for the Texas Tech community.

Students can browse and search listings, list items for sale, save items, manage a cart, view purchases and sales, and track their marketplace activity through their profile.

Our goal is simple: make buying and selling within the TTU community easier, more organized, and more convenient.

How we built it

We built the frontend using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, creating dedicated pages for listings, individual products, selling items, the shopping cart, payment, authentication, and user profiles.

We used Supabase for our backend, database, and authentication system and GitHub for version control and team collaboration.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was turning individual pages into one connected and functional application.

Authentication, email confirmation, database integration, and keeping user-specific information consistent across different pages required significantly more work than simply designing the interface.

Working as a team also taught us how to manage changes through GitHub, resolve conflicts, and combine everyone's work into one project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that TTU Marketplace grew from an idea into a functional full-stack project.

Instead of stopping at a UI prototype, we connected our frontend to a real backend and implemented authentication and marketplace functionality.

We're also proud of creating a consistent Texas Tech-inspired experience while keeping the platform simple and familiar for students.

What we learned

Building TTU Marketplace taught us that developing a real application involves much more than creating individual webpages.

We gained hands-on experience with frontend development, backend integration, authentication, databases, Git/GitHub, debugging, and team collaboration.

Most importantly, we learned how to identify a real problem within our community and work together to turn an idea into a working product.

What's next for TTU Marketplace

We want to continue developing TTU Marketplace with features such as TTU email verification, real-time messaging, advanced search and filtering, ratings and reviews, notifications, stronger transaction security, and improved listing management.

Ultimately, we envision TTU Marketplace becoming a trusted student-to-student platform where Red Raiders can easily buy, sell, and connect within their own campus community.
