Inspiration
I work away from my hometown on weekdays and care for my elderly mother on weekends. Information never reached me, and care paperwork deadlines kept slipping. I built TsunaCare to fix my own problem.
What it does
A shared care timeline for the family, deadline management with templates for Japanese care paperwork, and 30-second voice logging structured by AI.
How we built it
Expo + React Native + TypeScript, Supabase (Auth/Postgres/Realtime), RevenueCat for subscriptions, OneSignal for reminders. Built with Claude Code.
Challenges we ran into
Two rejections from Google Play production access. The first came after fixing everything testers reported — but I shipped those fixes after the test window, not during it, so none of the activity showed on Play's side. The second taught me the application form needs dates, not just a list of what was fixed.
What we learned
The database work was the real education. A trigger meant to lock immutable columns was also blocking the internal update that runs when someone leaves a family group — which would have broken account deletion, a Play data safety requirement. Found it before release.
Also: contrast complaints are measurable. A tester said cards were hard to see on one wallpaper. Measuring relative luminance showed the card and wallpaper were within 0.2% of each other, and it affected every wallpaper, not just the reported one.
What's next for TsunaCare
iOS, once I have a Mac. Voice logging refinement. And getting the production access approval that has eluded me twice.
