Inspiration: I really wanted to do this theme because a few months ago, my dad was almost scammed by a realistic AI generated video of Mark Carney on Facebook that was trying to scam people into sending money to "Mark Carney". Thankfully he asked me first before sending the money, and I was able to successfully stop him from getting scammed, but so many of these AI slop videos can trick people and someone who wasn't as fortunate may have gotten scammed by one of them, so when the topic of critical thinking came up, I knew I wanted to do something like this and worked with the team to make it.

What it does: It takes a transcript from a YouTube short, analyzes it, and uses ai to give it a truth score based on facts and evidence. It also makes the user guess the score before it shows the score / justification of the short so that the user can learn how to detect scams, slop, and untrue content which increases their critical thinking skills.

How we built it: We mainly used Python for the backend for analyzing the transcript fetched from the youtube short, and used JavaScript for the extension and to hold the front end.

Challenges we ran into: We had some issues getting the server to work and connecting the frontend to the back end, but ultimately everything ended up working well together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: That we were able to get everything we wanted working together in just 24 hours.

What we learned: Connecting the front end to the back end is not as easy as it seems! And in research for this project, we learned that there is so much AI slop online and that it is so easy to get tricked if you are not careful.

What's next for TruthBeTold: Hopefully, we would be able to scale this into other short form apps (like Instagram Reels, TikTok) and maybe even develop an Android app that could be an overlay over any type of content the user wanted!
