Inspiration

The rapid growth of generative AI has made it increasingly difficult to distinguish authentic digital content from manipulated or AI-generated media. Deepfakes, edited images, fabricated documents, and synthetic content are creating challenges for governments, businesses, journalists, financial institutions, and everyday internet users. We were inspired to build TrustTrace because trust has become one of the most valuable and vulnerable assets in the digital age. Our goal was to create a platform that helps organizations verify the authenticity of digital content before making critical decisions based on it.

What it does

TrustTrace is an AI-powered content authenticity verification platform that analyzes images, videos, and documents to determine whether they are authentic, manipulated, or potentially AI-generated.

Users can upload digital content and receive:

  • Authenticity scores
  • Metadata analysis
  • Tampering detection insights
  • AI-generation indicators
  • Verification reports
  • Audit trails
  • Downloadable verification certificates

TrustTrace helps organizations reduce misinformation, combat fraud, improve compliance, and increase confidence in digital evidence.

How we built it

We built TrustTrace as a full-stack web application using Vercel and AWS databases.

The frontend was built with Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui to create a modern and responsive user experience. Authentication and user management were implemented to support secure access and report history.

On the backend, we used AWS Aurora PostgreSQL as the primary database for storing users, uploaded files, verification results, reports, and audit logs. The verification pipeline processes uploaded content, extracts metadata, evaluates authenticity indicators, generates risk scores, and stores the results for future access.

The application was deployed on Vercel, allowing rapid development, seamless deployment, and efficient integration with backend services. We designed the architecture to be scalable and production-ready from the beginning.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a verification workflow that could provide meaningful authenticity insights while remaining fast and scalable. Digital content comes in many formats, and each type requires different validation approaches.

Another challenge was structuring the data model to support large-scale verification histories, audit records, and future enterprise features while maintaining performance. Balancing user experience, security, and scalability also required careful planning throughout the development process.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Building a production-oriented verification platform rather than a simple prototype.
  • Creating a complete end-to-end workflow from content upload to verification reporting.
  • Designing a scalable architecture using AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and Vercel.
  • Developing an authenticity scoring system that presents complex verification data in an understandable way.
  • Delivering a solution with potential applications across government, finance, insurance, media, and cybersecurity industries.

What we learned

This project deepened our understanding of content verification systems, scalable database architecture, and modern full-stack development workflows. We learned how critical data integrity, auditability, and trust mechanisms are when building systems that support decision-making.

We also gained valuable experience integrating cloud-native infrastructure with modern frontend frameworks while designing for future growth rather than just hackathon requirements.

What's next for TrustTrace

TrustTrace is designed as the foundation for a much larger trust infrastructure platform.

Future development plans include:

  • Advanced deepfake detection models
  • Real-time verification APIs
  • Enterprise team workspaces
  • Browser extensions for instant content verification
  • Blockchain-backed verification certificates
  • Cross-platform verification services
  • Newsroom and government intelligence dashboards
  • Global content trust networks
  • Automated evidence-chain tracking
  • Regulatory and compliance reporting tools

Our long-term vision is to make TrustTrace a global trust layer for digital content, helping organizations and individuals confidently determine what is real in an increasingly AI-generated world.
