Inspiration
We often assume that dining at reputed or high-end restaurants guarantees food safety and hygiene. However, in reality, customers have no direct way to verify how their food is prepared behind the scenes. During a recent dining experience, we realized that even well-rated restaurants rely heavily on trust rather than transparency. This raised an important question: what if customers could actually verify food hygiene instead of just assuming it? We discovered that hygiene inspections are often infrequent, manual, and not visible to customers. This gap between expectation and reality inspired us to build TrustPlate — a system where trust is not assumed, but verified.
What it does
TrustPlate is a QR-based system that allows customers to instantly access real-time information about food safety, hygiene, and freshness. By scanning a QR code placed on the table, users can view cleanliness scores, kitchen hygiene status, food freshness details, and customer ratings. The system also provides visual insights through graphs and allows users to submit their own feedback. It transforms the dining experience by bringing transparency directly to the customer.
How we built it
We built TrustPlate using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a clean and responsive user interface. The platform is deployed using Netlify, allowing easy access through a QR code without requiring any application download. We implemented dynamic graphs using JavaScript to visualize hygiene and rating trends. We also simulated an AI-based verification system that evaluates kitchen conditions such as cleanliness, glove usage, and food safety, and displays real-time status updates to users.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing a system that feels realistic without having access to real-time kitchen data or actual AI models. We also faced difficulties in making the UI look professional and interactive within a limited time. Creating smooth animations and meaningful data visualization required multiple iterations. Another challenge was ensuring that the system clearly communicates trust and reliability to users in a simple and understandable way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built a working prototype that demonstrates a complete user journey—from scanning a QR code to viewing real-time safety insights. We are proud of creating a clean, modern interface with dynamic graphs and interactive features that enhance user experience.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to quickly transform an idea into a working product under time constraints. We gained hands-on experience in UI/UX design, web deployment, and presenting a solution effectively to judges. Most importantly, we learned the importance of solving real-world problems with simple, scalable solutions and how impactful transparency can be in building user trust.
What's next for TrustPlate - Scan. Verify. Trust.
We plan to take TrustPlate beyond a prototype and evolve it into a fully functional real-world system. In the next phase, we aim to integrate real AI-based computer vision models that can automatically detect hygiene practices such as glove usage, cleanliness, and food handling directly from kitchen cameras. We also plan to connect TrustPlate with food delivery platforms, enabling users to verify hygiene and safety before placing orders online. Another key step is collaborating with food safety authorities to introduce verified certifications, increasing credibility and trust for both customers and restaurants. Additionally, we aim to build a multi-restaurant network, allowing users to compare hygiene standards across different restaurants and make more informed choices. In the long term, we envision adding live kitchen streaming and real-time alerts, creating a transparent ecosystem where food safety is continuously monitored and visible to everyone
