Inspiration

In West Africa, informal e-commerce through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram is growing very fast. However, fraud and identity impersonation are common. Many buyers lose money after sending payments to fake sellers. We were inspired by the idea of using Digital Identity systems to bring trust into informal digital commerce. We wanted to create a solution that protects buyers while helping honest small merchants prove their legitimacy.

What it does

TrustID Commerce is a Digital ID-based verification platform that secures informal online commerce. It allows sellers to voluntarily verify their identity using a national Digital ID system. Once verified, they receive a secure “Verified Seller” badge linked to their phone number and business account. Buyers can scan a QR code or use a verification link to confirm the seller’s authenticity without exposing sensitive personal data.

How we built it

We designed the solution as a mobile-first web platform. We created the system architecture connecting sellers, buyers, and a Digital ID verification API. We designed a secure verification flow using QR codes. We applied a privacy-by-design approach to ensure personal data protection. We structured the model to integrate with systems like MOSIP through secure APIs. The focus was on simplicity, scalability, and accessibility.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was designing a system that ensures strong identity verification while still protecting user privacy. Another challenge was adapting the solution to informal commerce, where sellers often operate only through social media without formal registration. We also had to think carefully about accessibility for users with limited digital literacy.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of: Designing a solution that directly addresses real fraud issues in our region. Creating a model that balances security and privacy. Developing a scalable concept that can work across multiple African countries. Working effectively as a team and combining our different skills.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned: How Digital ID systems can be applied beyond government services. The importance of trust in digital economies. How to design solutions that are inclusive and mobile-friendly. The value of teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.

What's next for TrustID Commerce

Next steps include: Developing a functional prototype. Partnering with Digital ID providers and merchant associations. Testing the solution with real informal sellers. Expanding the platform across West Africa. Our long-term vision is to make informal digital commerce safer and more trusted across Africa.
