About the Project
Inspiration The inspiration for this project comes from observing a persistent challenge across African communities: the lack of trusted, accessible, and structured information that supports local economic participation. In the tourism sector, which is a key driver of livelihoods for many small businesses and women-led enterprises, information is often fragmented, outdated, or difficult to verify. At the same time, the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence presents both an opportunity and a risk while AI can improve access to information and automate services, it can also amplify misinformation if not properly designed for trust and local context.
This gap inspired the idea for an AI-powered trusted information system that can strengthen economic inclusion, especially for informal tourism operators and small-scale entrepreneurs.
What I Learned Through developing this concept, I learned that the biggest barrier to digital transformation is not only technology, but trust, accessibility, and usability. Many users in informal economies do not lack motivation they lack tools that are simple, reliable, and adapted to their realities, such as low connectivity, shared devices, and limited digital literacy.
I also learned that Artificial Intelligence can be most impactful when it is designed as an assistive layer, not a replacement for human decision-making. In this project, AI is used to support verification, communication, translation, and business assistance, rather than fully automating human relationships.
How the Project Was Built
The project was designed as a conceptual AI system called Trusted AI for African Livelihoods, built around four core components:
- AI Information Layer – Uses language models to generate, summarize, and verify tourism and local business information.
- Trust and Verification System – Introduces structured validation of listings and service providers to reduce misinformation and fraud.
- Economic Access Engine – Connects users to verified opportunities, such as tourism services, local guides, and small businesses.
- User Interface Layer– A mobile-first, low-bandwidth design optimized for accessibility in rural and semi-urban environments.
The system is designed to be modular, allowing it to scale across regions and adapt to different local contexts.
Challenges Faced
One of the main challenges in building this project was balancing **innovation with realism. While AI technologies are powerful, applying them in low-resource environments requires careful consideration of connectivity, cost, and usability constraints.
Another challenge was addressing the issue of trust in digital systems. Many users in informal economies are hesitant to rely on online platforms due to past experiences with misinformation or unreliable services. Designing for trust therefore became a central requirement rather than an optional feature.
Additionally, ensuring that the system remains inclusive for women and marginalized groups required careful attention to social norms, access barriers, and safety concerns.
Conclusion This project represents a vision for how Artificial Intelligence can be used not just for efficiency, but for equity and inclusion. By focusing on trusted information and economic access, it aims to strengthen informal tourism systems and support sustainable livelihoods across Africa.
Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that AI becomes a tool that empowers people especially those traditionally excluded from digital transformation to participate meaningfully in the evolving digital economy.
