Improve medication adherence to improve healthcare of people who take medications

What it does

Our Pill Packet dispenser reminds people when to take their medication and dispenses a pill packet at the right time and place. It also uses Alexa conversations to answer their medication questions

How we built it

we built it using raspberry pi stepper and servo motors with a touch display to show user interface and Animated Character to answer medication questions.

Challenges we ran into

Using Ai to identify pills, text, and where to cut the pill packets on the perforation line between packets.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Pill Image segmentation and text OCR recognition works well and Traci the ai driven talking medication assistant animated character.

What we learned

Some of the factors of low adherence are forgetfulness, prohibitive pricing of medications, and poor health literacy leading to patients not taking medication. While this device could not x cases where patients can't aord their medication, it can have a large impact on the other scenarios. If a person with multiple chronic health conditions and a complicated regiment of medication to take has trouble remembering whether or not they took a certain medication; then the TruMedicines pill dispenser will help them remember to take their medications. Additionally, if a person with a condition causing memory loss needed to take a prescription medication the pill dispenser could track medication usage for the patient.

What's next for TruMedicines Smart Pill Packet Dispenser

Further work on this project should focus mainly on improving the reliability of the hardware designs, and integration. The web application and computer vision algorithm being integrated on the Raspberry Pi will allow for more processes to be added into the system such as facial recognition of users before taking pills and enhancing existing AWS services such as PillPack and the personal data sensor device Halo. packets to users.
