Inspiration

Financial literacy is a significant barrier for many people—whether employees trying to understand their company’s financials, small business owners managing day-to-day operations, or potential investors looking to make informed decisions. The lack of understanding around financial statements and business finance can limit opportunities and hinder progress. Half of our team works at non-profits, where we’ve seen how this lack of financial knowledge can hold back important missions, making it harder to make informed choices about resources and growth. Truest Assist was born from the idea that learning finance shouldn’t be boring—it should be interactive, rewarding, and even a little rebellious.

What it does

Truest Assist makes business finance engaging and accessible by guiding users through interactive modules on key concepts like financial statements, EBITDA, cash flow, and comparative analysis. Whether you're an employee looking to understand your company's financial health, a small business owner making important decisions, or someone simply looking to improve their financial literacy, Truest Assist helps you take control of your financial knowledge in a fun and motivating way. Users earn rewards—including rock & roll music—for climbing leaderboards, achieving milestones, and mastering key financial concepts.

How we built it

We built Truest Assist using the following tech stack: Frontend: Next.js 14, TypeScript, and TailwindCSS for a smooth, responsive, and modern user interface. Backend: Next.js, Bcrypt for secure authentication, and MongoDB for data storage. Database: MongoDB Atlas for managing user progress and financial data.

Challenges we ran into

Simplifying complex financial concepts without losing depth or practical value. Creating an engaging experience for a wide range of users, from beginners to those with more knowledge. Ensuring gamification elements meaningfully contribute to the learning process and don’t feel gimmicky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building an accessible and fun way to learn about business finance, without feeling like a chore. Designing a clear, structured path for users to build their financial knowledge and apply it to real-world scenarios. Creating an interactive and user-friendly interface that motivates users to engage with the content. Helping users overcome the fear and confusion often associated with financial statements and business finance.

What we learned

Gamification significantly improves retention and makes financial education much more engaging. Many users are intimidated by financial statements—but once presented in an interactive and approachable way, they feel more confident and capable. Rewards like music and community features encourage users to continue learning and growing their financial knowledge. Financial literacy is not just for investors—it’s essential for employees, small business owners, and anyone looking to make smarter decisions in their personal or professional life.

What's next for Truest Assist

Expanding the curriculum with deeper topics such as budgeting, forecasting, and understanding key performance indicators. Fully integrating the TrustBot with capabilities to answer personal questions and curiosities and also fully implementing voice response answers and relevant feedback in order to improve users' financial diction. Introducing a community feature where users can share insights, challenge each other, and discuss how finance applies to their work and personal lives. Launching a mobile app for learning on-the-go, making financial literacy more accessible than ever. Partnering with small businesses, non-profits, and other organizations to offer real-world financial analysis exercises and practical learning opportunities.
