Inspiration
In today’s world, we’re bombarded with choices, but quantity often overshadows quality. TrueCritic was built to redefine urban exploration by curating only the best-rated venues in smart cities, focusing on genuine quality and recognized awards to cut through the noise.
What it does
TrueCritic ranks the top restaurants and hotels, drawing on both user reviews and elite industry accolades. By aggregating data from Google Places, Reddit, and award sites like James Beard and Forbes Travel, it highlights the most acclaimed venues in any area. This focus on quality makes TrueCritic an ideal fit for the smart city ecosystem, where efficiency and informed choices are key.
How I built it
I used Next.js to ensure a smooth, responsive user experience and styled the interface with Tailwind CSS for clarity and simplicity. Google Places powers the initial data collection, which is enriched with additional insights from web scraping and Reddit reviews. The backend merges and ranks this data, creating an intuitive interface that emphasizes quality and supports smart city navigation.
Challenges I ran into
The primary challenge was consolidating diverse data sources and normalizing them for consistent quality ranking. I also needed to design a balanced algorithm that weighs user reviews and industry awards fairly, ensuring the rankings genuinely reflect excellence rather than popularity.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
TrueCritic offers a unique combination of prestigious awards and public opinions, delivering a curated experience beyond typical review apps. I’m proud of how this project navigates the complexities of data integration to present users with trustworthy, top-tier recommendations—an essential feature for smart cities aiming to deliver efficient, high-quality services.
What I learned
I gained valuable skills in data scraping, multi-API integration, and building a ranking system that combines diverse data points. This project also reinforced the importance of design and usability, especially when catering to users seeking simplicity and quality in smart city environments.
What's next for TrueCritic
Next, I plan to expand TrueCritic to cover more cities and add categories like cultural attractions to diversify its scope. I’m exploring predictive analytics to spotlight emerging hotspots, keeping TrueCritic relevant and valuable as smart cities continue to evolve.
