Inspiration

When looking over the theme for this event, the word communicate stood out. We thought about those who struggled with communication or relied on an app and buttons to get thoughts across. That led us to look into Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps and their limitations on the user and those around them.

What it does

Though not quite complete yet, True Voice is an app-inspired site that utilizes voice inflections and conversations to prompt answers for the user. It includes a variety of responses with the option to choose your voice from a variety of accents and regions. It is also integrated with AI to analyze conversations further, though our stopping point was before we could fully integrate the API function. You can also scroll through the various topics to choose what to say if you do not want to use the voice/microphone function. By clicking the microphone and allowing it to use your microphone, you can ask it questions about a variety of topics, such as school, feelings, and food. It also tells the user the emotional value of the conversation and whether the words are a question or a statement. We decided to make it look like a phone and an app instead of forming a full app for the sake of time and skill level.

How we built it

To build this, we first brainstormed ideas and searched for the struggles users and support systems might have. We then used Antigravity to assist in React components and implementation.

Challenges we ran into

The most difficult portion of this was coming up with what prompts and how this is different from other apps. Another challenge was the API integration, but we will focus more on that development in personal projects that take off with this app idea.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our ability to work together, while under high levels of stress and at times being completely lost. We were able to create something that goes beyond the standard AAC app and is inclusive for those who might feel they don't have a voice. It is important that everyone feels loved, included, and heard. True Voice will let voices be heard while overcoming stereotypes and a lack of emotional nuance for all.

What we learned

We learned AI can be hard to learn and prompt. We also learned to step back and understand what was going on in the code and in Antigravity, so we can go off and write on our own. It is important to know how to identify struggles and incorrect code on your own without relying on AI or the internet to do everything for you.

What's next for True Voice

Next for True Voice, we will be correcting the AI Helper and properly integrating the API. We would also like to take this and turn it into a real app while identifying features that best suit each user for their personal use. We want more voice, more prompts, more responses, better emotional analysis, and more voices to be heard. We want to focus on refining and implementing those features that we could not accomplish in 24 hours.
