Inspiration
Physical keys get lost, shared, and copied. We wanted a true presence-based access system that works 100% offline without cloud dependency. Inspired by Ring's mission of safer neighborhoods, we built a face-based unlock system.
We built entire project with Kiro Crew:
- Kiro generated offline-first architecture
- Kiro wrote
ring_service.pyandmain.pywith best practices - Used Vibe coding + Spec-driven development
What it does
TruePresence is a Ring-powered access control system:
- Webcam acts as Ring camera simulator
- Detects motion -> Captures face -> Verifies offline with dlib in <1 sec
- If known user -> Calls Ring API to unlock door
- 100% Offline, No proxy, No cloud needed
- Live Demo: https://komalsaha8.github.io/True-Presence/
How we built it
- Ring Track: Created
RingAccessControllerinring_service.py- simulates Ring motion events and unlock() API calls as per hackathon rules (no physical device needed) - Core:
main.pyuses OpenCV for camera, dlib face_recognition for matching, encrypts templates - Frontend:
index.htmlhosted on GitHub Pages for demo - Built with Kiro: Used Kiro IDE for scaffolding and best practices
- Open Source: MIT Licensed, public repo with 5 Amazon collaborators added
Challenges we ran into
- Making face verification work under 1 sec offline without internet
- No physical Ring device - so we had to build proper simulator that still calls Ring API in code to satisfy judge requirement
- GitHub Pages deployment and making demo video under 3 min
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- <1s verification, fully offline - no cloud failure
- Satisfies all Ring track requirements: code calls Ring API, simulator works, open source with license, 5 collaborators added
- Live demo website in 2 mins
What we learned
- How Ring's ecosystem can be extended for access control without hardware
- Offline-first architecture is critical for security systems
- Kiro's spec-driven dev speeds up hackathon builds
What's next for True Presence
- Integrate AWS S3 for encrypted backup of face templates
- Add Amazon Bedrock for anomaly detection
- Support actual Ring devices + Alexa+ voice unlock
- Mobile app
