Inspiration
The three of us were thinking about Castaway, and decided to make an elementary game based off of the movie.
What it does
Runs a program with a window that sets a player character on an island. The player has to find certain objects in order to escape.
How we built it
The program was built in Java, utilizing JPanel and no other GUIs.
Challenges we ran into
By building the game without a game engine, it was difficult to build a map and the individual sprites that was placed on the game. We also had conflicting ideas at the start, resulting in less time coding.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to create a walking animation for the player character, as well as building a 2048 x 2048 pixel map for the player to traverse. We also created every tile pattern by hand, resulting in a game that we poured plenty of blood, sweat, and tears into.
What we learned
When building a game, also check for game engines that are compatible for your programming language. This would have helped save a lot of time when we started coding. We also should have made sure of every team member's goals and plans, in order to prevent having conflicting concepts.
What's next for TropicRPG
TropicRPG was a game built specifically for us to learn about game design, as well as seeing if we were capable of building a functional game within 24 hours. Ultimately, we succeeded, and TropicRPG will only serve as a program to look back upon when we've developed bigger things in the future.
