Inspiration
The tropic theme of the event and wanting to see what we as a group could do in Python (a language none of use to this capacity prior to this challenge.
What it does
Provides narrative paths that the user can choose, causing different events and minigames to occur, thus changing the experience of one player from another.
How we built it
Having a player function that stored all character information that was relevant from certain events occurring, and using that stored information to present other alternative paths.
Challenges we ran into
Trying to create utility functions like a checker for optional paths to prevent users from choosing a nonexistent path. At one point we had an efficient function that could be used universally in the program but at some point it stop working, and even when we rolled back to previous versions this function had worked on, it no longer did. So, due to time, we had to fall back on a more tedious constant if statement checks which works. Other times sometimes during development, life paths crossed inexplicably for no reason.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The minigames included in the game as well as some of the other counters like the blood alcohol content (BAC) counter that would change based on your weight and based on your consumption of drinks optionally throughout an instance of the game.
What we learned
How to use python in different ways
What's next for Tropic Adventure
Adding true endings that are based off of ending stats, for example, having an unusually high BAC, or maybe gambling more often than the usual player. Also adding more days to the 'vacation' to allow more exploration, story-driven elements, and unique experiences between players.
