Inspiration
We are Trood, a new and improved approach towards reducing food waste. Our goal for global food waste reduction starts small - at the dining halls of USC. Having been loyal patrons to our USC dining halls, we have seen firsthand the amount of food that can be wasted each meal. Trood begins as a meal swipe companion app aimed at tracking students’ food waste at the university dining halls, with the aim of eventually impacting food waste on a global scale.
What it does
Trood tracks the amount of food waste a student produces from day to day at registered dining halls in USC. With a snapshot of the student’s plate after he/she’s finished eating Trood calculates the percentage of food left over relative to the size of the plate.
For each individual user Trood displays daily performance and food preservation progress from month to month. Trood will have a community leaderboard to encourage and motivate participants to put forward more effort. A calendar feature also allows users to reflect on their food waste performances in days past.
How we built it
We used flutter, a tool especially used to build and design any mobile applications through a single code base. By combining flutter and VScode, we were able to dissect the project into manageable parts.
Challenges we ran into
Technical: Using Flutter for the first time Properly applying the camera function
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating our first app Coming up with something that can be incorporated into the USC system?
What we learned
Learnt the basics of Flutter Figma prototyping
What's next for Trood
We intend for Trood to be able to distinguish food waste into separate categories in the future. Having this information would allow us to identify which types of food are responsible for the most food waste. This technology would allow Trood to function as a very effective constant feedback loop: 1) Collect and visualize data 2) Understand and adjust based on data 3) Collect and visualize data 4) Observe changes and continue adjusting; Trood is starting at the university scale because many factors are easier to manage and control. As the software becomes more sophisticated, we will prepare to make the step into society. At the large scale Trood would be working with restaurants large and small and extend into even the home-cooking scene.
