TROACO by Rare Vandal using FonoRoot NFT system

an exploration in audio nfts

Inspiration

Since early 2020 DAOrecords has been experimenting and innovating in the Audio NFT space, whether through the joint creation of the first playable MP3 Audio NFT with Mintbase in May 2020 or the Rare Vandal Project in 2021, we have been waiting for the opportune time to BUIDL and its finally here!

The inspiration for this project is "FonoRoot", a concept that Starpause had come up with during NEARCon 2021 in Lisbon and something that we felt would fit perfectly into the first iteration of the DAOrecords NFT deployer to be built on NEAR. FonoRoot is a "supply on demand" model where the creator only needs to mint once, so when a person buys one of the NFTs two new ones are created, building out a "Root" system.

What it does

Our DAOrecords MVP allows the creator (in this case Vandal) to mint an NFT in the admin panel and have it appear on the website we built exclusively for the Audio NFT Release (in this case Vandal's album TROACO).

The site acts as any custom NFT marketplace would, by allowing the user to connect their wallet, select a song (listen to it and read about it) and buy the NFT with a click of the button.

Once the first NFT is purchased (Gen 1), two more become available (listed as Gen 2) and so on down the "Root" system creating new NFTs on demand and as needed.

Once bought, NFTs are then held in the "My NFTs" tab where the user can listen to them, list them for sale or transfer them to another wallet.

We introduced some cool elements, like a Counter at the top of the page to demark how many NFTs have been minted and a Guestbook where people can sign and leave comments on-chain!

How we built it

It's all about teamwork! The concept was conveyed by Vandal, along with providing the music and inspiration for the visuals created by Lena, who went above and beyond to make the site a visually appealing as possible. Peter took it upon himself to tackle the "FonoRoot" system with assistance from Matt & Starpause and integrate all the elements into what you see when you visit the website and interact with the project!

It was honestly a real pleasure to build this together!

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge was a lack of time to include all the features we wanted to in this MVP. But I guess that's what makes it an MVP right?

Part of that challenge was incorporating the aesthetic elements, like the interactive globe, which took a while to figure out. Other than that we managed to overcome time zones to connect regularly and bang out as much as we could in time for our last minute submission!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We didn't know each other prior to this. Vandal, who had the idea and concept, reached out to Lena and Peter through Devpost and both of them were interested and we immediately got to it!

We're really proud of the design, both visually and with the first iteration of the FonoRoot system, which is primed and ready for us to build on top of. And, through working together we found the process quite smooth, so much so that we will be continuing on with the project via DAOrecords and building out all the features we weren't able to for our entry!

What we learned

We learned that things take longer than we imagine they should. But that through strong communication and flexibility we can accomplish anything together!

We also learned that there is so much more we need to learn, especially when it comes to developing a new system for deploying NFTs it requires a lot more attention to detail and some extra hands on deck (which are coming!).

What's next for DAOrecords MVP - TROACO by Rare Vandal

Once we debug and fine tune the project on Testnet we will be deploying it on Mainnet and releasing it to the public as an official DAOrecords x Rare Vandal Audio NFT Drop! Oh, and of course we're going to throw a party in the Metaverse for it!

We're also using this as a "template" for the coming SoundSplash Metaverse Event & NFT Drop series being put together by DAOrecords for April 2022 Alpha Launch so stay tuned for that!

Thanks for considering our entry and we hope you enjoy the experience, the music and the art!
