TripTales – Custom Travel Journal App

TripTales is a smart travel assistant and journal for modern explorers. It helps users plan, document, and relive their journeys with multimedia journaling, real-time collaboration, AI-powered suggestions, and interactive maps.

Inspiration:

Traveling is deeply personal, yet many existing tools feel generic — either too focused on logistics or too shallow for meaningful reflection. We wanted to build a tool that:

  1. Helps plan trips smartly using AI.

    2.Encourages users to capture memories richly through photos, voice notes, and stories.

  2. Enables collaboration with travel buddies during the planning and journaling phase.

  3. Feels like both a companion and a canvas.

Our inspiration stemmed from the gap between travel planning apps and journaling apps — we envisioned TripTales to combine the best of both, enhanced by Perplexity AI’s research power.

How We Built It :

TripTales was developed as a Flutter mobile app for Android, using a stack of modern APIs and frameworks:

1.Flutter: Cross-platform app development

2.Firebase: Authentication, real-time database, cloud storage

3.Google Maps API: Location tagging, route planning, map view

  1. Perplexity AI API: Travel question answering + trip recommendations

    5.Custom Widgets: For calendar, dropdowns, dynamic question rendering

We designed our UX to support both structured planning (with dropdowns, dates, tags) and unstructured journaling (voice notes, images, text entries). Our AI integration enhances both planning and exploration.

Perplexity AI Integration:

TripTales uses Perplexity AI in two core modules:

  1. Smart Planner: Based on user’s trip type, dates, destination, and preferences, we query Perplexity to generate personalized recommendations — like local cuisine, hidden spots, safety tips, and cultural insights.

    1. Travel Chatbot: Users can ask travel-related questions (e.g., "Is it safe to visit Istanbul in July?") and receive accurate, conversational responses backed by Perplexity’s research engine.

This research-based layer turns TripTales into an intelligent, dynamic trip companion.

Features:

  1. Trip Planning: Collaborative itineraries, Google Maps integration, smart suggestions.

  2. Journaling: Add entries via photos, videos, text, and voice notes. Auto-tag memories by mood or location.

  3. Interactive Map: View color-coded trips, bookmark spots, and navigate past routes.

    4.AI Assistant: Travel questions answered in natural language.

  4. Notifications: Timely reminders and updates during planning and travel.

Challenges We Faced :

  1. Integrating Perplexity AI smoothly within the Flutter UI.

  2. Handling real-time collaboration with Firebase across devices.

  3. Designing a fluid and responsive journal interface that supports multimedia.

  4. Keeping the app lightweight and responsive even with maps and media.

    5.Ensuring reliable location services across different Android devices.

What We Learned :

1.How to architect a complex, multi-module app in Flutter with clean navigation and state management.

2.How to query and handle responses from the Perplexity AI API efficiently.

3.Best practices for using Google Maps APIs and integrating Firebase services.
  1. How to build an intuitive interface for both planning and storytelling.

What's Next:

  1. Expand chatbot with real-time travel data (weather, transport, local events).

    2.Add offline journaling with smart syncing when reconnected.

    3.Support for multi-language journaling and translations.

  2. Include mood-based prompts and sentiment detection for smarter journaling.

  3. Enable export to PDF or printed travel books.
