Inspiration

Travel plans often become difficult when flights are delayed, bookings change, or activities are not properly connected. Travelers usually manage flights, hotels, and activities across different platforms, making it difficult to understand the complete journey or recover from disruptions.

We created TripRescue to make travel planning more organized, connected, and easier to manage. The idea is to provide one platform where users can create trips, manage itinerary items, view their journey through different layouts, and understand how disruptions may affect their plans.

What it does

TripRescue allows users to:

  • Register and log in securely.
  • Create and manage personal trips.
  • Add and organize itinerary items.
  • View trips through timeline, graph, map, and booking views.
  • Keep travel information connected to a single trip.
  • Demonstrate travel delays, failures, and recovery workflows where supported.
  • Preserve trip data after refreshing or logging in again.

How we built it

The frontend was built using React, Vite, and TypeScript. It communicates with a FastAPI backend through structured API requests. The backend uses SQLAlchemy for database operations and supports SQLite for development and PostgreSQL for production.

Authentication and authorization ensure that users can access only their own trips. Alembic is used for database migrations, while the frontend displays the same backend data through the timeline, graph, map, and booking views.

Challenges we faced

One of our main challenges was keeping the different views synchronized with the same backend data. We also had to handle authentication, user isolation, data persistence, API validation, database migrations, and error handling.

Another challenge was designing the project so that it could grow from a simple travel planner into a more complete travel recovery platform with provider-based flight, hotel, and activity search.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to connect a modern frontend with a backend API, implement authentication, manage relational data, design connected itinerary structures, use database migrations, and prepare an application for deployment.

TripRescue is designed as a foundation for a real-world travel assistant that can become more powerful through live travel-provider integrations and intelligent recovery recommendations.
