Inspiration
We wanted to create a game based on transportation, so we tripped into the perfect idea: TripPin! We were inspired by the TigerHacks website and wanted to include some of the modes of transportation included there in our own project, as well as our own.
What it does
We created a game where there are 3 levels, each with a different mode of transportation. The player’s goal is to hit the mode of transport with a pin, while both objects are moving. When the player successfully hits the transport for that level 5 times, they move on to the next level, with each level getting successively more difficult.
How we built it
We created the game using GameMaker Studio.
Challenges we ran into
When our team began brainstorming, we had a lot different ideas for projects we could implement. We originally wanted to create a website, but we ran into several issues. For example, we realized that we couldn’t find a good way to build and design a website with our knowledge of C++, Java, and Python and our lack of experience with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This was especially an issue due to our limited time. We also tried using some of the provided MLH resources for website development but some of them were difficult to use or relied less on coding. This led us to making a game, which was something that we had some basic knowledge of. This was somewhat daunting to us, mostly because of the graphical aspects of game development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our finished game, despite how it differs from our original plan. We also are really happy with the name, slogan, and logo we came up with. This project is something we are proud of because we had little to no prior experience with game development or with creating graphics and we got to learn and implement both.
What we learned
We learned what we can and can’t apply the knowledge and languages we know to. For instance, we know that there are many other uses for C++, Java, and Python, but it may not necessarily be for game development. We learned how to use GameMaker Studio.
What's next for TripPin
Something we would have liked to implement was a point system or highscores to make it more interesting and engaging. We would like to have music and a game menu at the beginning. We have a lot of ideas for our game, but we didn’t have the time or resources to apply them. Hopefully with future learning and experience, we can learn to implement our ideas and make an even better game.
