Inspiration

The idea for Tryple emerged before the First Commit challenge. Initially, I wanted to create a portfolio project that would also help me learn mobile development.

The concept was to build an app that gathered—in one place—the key information and features a traveler might need, such as destinations, tourist attractions, hotels, trip planning, and itineraries.

For a while, the idea remained just a concept on paper. First Commit was the challenge that motivated me to finally turn that idea into a functional project.

During development, I realized I needed to scale back the initial scope. Consequently, the first version of Tryple focused primarily on discovering destinations and places to visit, as well as organizing trips.

What it does

Tryple is a mobile app designed for destination discovery and trip planning.

With it, users can:

  • Explore destinations;
  • Filter destinations by continent, country, and state;
  • View information about destinations;
  • Discover tourist attractions;
  • Check the best time to visit a destination;
  • Check weather information;
  • Save destinations and attractions to favorites;
  • Create trips and set travel dates;
  • Organize attractions by day;
  • Create an account and log in;
  • Manage their profile and personal data.

The goal is to combine place discovery and initial trip organization into a single app.

How we built it

Tryple was developed as a mobile app using React Native, Expo, and TypeScript.

I used React Navigation to structure navigation between screens and AsyncStorage to locally store data such as user info, sessions, favorites, and trips.

I also developed reusable components and a custom interface to maintain a consistent experience across the app's various screens.

Finally, I used Expo and EAS Build to generate the Android version of the app in APK format.

Challenges Faced

One of the main challenges was organizing navigation between the app's various screens and features, especially since the project grew as new functionalities were added.

Working with local storage and ensuring that data—such as user profiles, favorites, and trip details—remained available while using the app also proved challenging.

Another challenge was determining what could realistically be developed within the hackathon timeframe. The initial concept was much more ambitious, so I had to scale back the scope and focus development on the core features.

Achievements I’m Proud Of

My greatest achievement was successfully transforming an idea that existed only on paper into a functional app.

I also consider it a major achievement to have stepped out of my comfort zone and worked on mobile development using technologies I was still learning, such as React Native, Expo, and TypeScript.

Furthermore, I managed to take the project through every stage: from defining the concept and designing the interface to implementing features, handling data storage, testing, and generating a functional APK.

What I Learned

During the hackathon, I learned a great deal about mobile app development and how the different parts of an application must work together.

I gained hands-on experience with React Native, navigation, local storage, reusable components, state management, and application architecture.

I also learned that turning an idea into a functional project requires setting priorities and adapting plans as challenges arise.

Beyond just learning new technologies, the project helped me better understand how to research, troubleshoot, and keep developing—even when working with tools I haven't yet mastered.

What’s Next for Tryple

The current version of Tryple focuses primarily on destination discovery and trip organization, but the original concept offers room for further expansion.

In future versions, I would like to explore features such as:

  • Improving the app's styling and responsiveness;
  • Adding information on hotels and accommodations;
  • Offering more comprehensive trip planning tools; - More advanced search and recommendations;
  • More detailed weather information;
  • Maps and location-based features;
  • More comprehensive itineraries;
  • Integration with external travel APIs;
  • User accounts with cloud storage and data synchronization.

The idea is to evolve Tryple gradually, transforming it from a travel discovery and organization app into a more comprehensive platform for trip planning.
