Travel, a fundamental aspect of the human experience, had come to a sudden halt.

As the dust began to settle, and we saw the world slowly adapting to a new normal, we realised that travel would never be the same again. People were longing to explore, yet they were cautious. They craved the thrill of new experiences but also sought safety and flexibility. It was amidst this landscape that TripIt was born – our answer to the evolving needs of the post-pandemic traveller.

As travellers ourselves, we understand the pain of handcrafting the perfect itinerary. However, this is all a thing of the past with TripIt. You tell us your dream destination, your travel dates, and what you love doing, and our AI assistant gets to work. The result is a tailor-made itinerary that you can adjust and fine-tune to your heart's content.

The Journey of Building TripIt

In tandem with the theme of sustainability, we referred to prompt engineering best principles to ensure that TripIt meets the needs and interests of our users while remaining environmentally conscious. We employed a user-centred approach, starting with comprehensive user research to understand the pain points and desires of travellers.

Using React for the front end allowed us to create a seamless and intuitive user interface, enabling travellers to effortlessly navigate through their itineraries. We prioritized simplicity and user-friendliness, ensuring that even the most technologically inexperienced individuals can easily plan their trips.

On the back end, Flask provided us with a robust foundation for building scalable and efficient APIs. We leveraged OpenAI's text models to personalize travel recommendations, delivering tailored suggestions that align with users' preferences and interests. This not only enhances the user experience but also reduces unnecessary travel and promotes sustainable tourism practices.

At TripIt, we believe that sustainable travel goes beyond just exploring new destinations. It's about making conscious choices and minimizing our impact on the environment. The collaboration and version control offered by Git and GitHub, while fantastic, also brought about unique challenges. Each team member was a champion of a specific component of TripIt, and bringing these pieces together was honestly one of the hardest challenges we faced. After countless hours of resolving merge conflicts, we eventually saw our mini-viable product come to life. That was our greatest moment of triumph!

As we look towards the future, we're enthused about the potential growth and expansion of TripIt. One of the key features on our roadmap is the integration of a host connection system, similar to the model adopted by Airbnb. Instead of homes, these hosts can offer guided tours for a variety of activities, adding a unique personal touch to the travel experience.

We also envision creating a social feature where users can share their experiences. Imagine a page where tourists can post about their visits to various attractions or eateries, fostering a lively community of travellers. This feature could also serve as a platform for users to connect with like-minded travellers, further enriching their travel experiences.

Our eyes are set on making the travelling experiences seamless and fuss-free. We're eager to steer TripIt towards a future of enhanced connectivity and personalization in travel planning.
